Despite Legal Pressure, Trump’s DOE Backs Down—No Accountability for WA’s Radical Education Agenda

Despite Legal Pressure, Trump’s DOE Backs Down—No Accountability for WA’s Radical Education Agenda

On July 25, Washington State Superintendent Chris Reykdal announced that the U.S. Department of Education will release over $137 million in federal K–12 education funds that had been temporarily withheld for review under President Trump’s executive priorities.

This funding spanning Title I (migrant education), Title II (educator training), Title III (English learners), and Title IV (after-school and supplemental programs), was originally paused to assess whether states like Washington were misusing federal dollars to promote radical gender ideology and controversial DEI initiatives in public schools.

Instead of holding the line on accountability, the Department has reversed course, releasing the full amount with no requirements for reform or transparency.

This decision comes after Washington Attorney General Nick Brown joined a lawsuit with 23 other progressive states and governors, arguing that the Trump administration’s temporary pause on funds was unlawful. Faced with mounting political and legal pressure from both sides of the aisle, the Department opted to release the money, giving Reykdal and Washington’s education establishment exactly what they wanted: more federal dollars with zero strings attached.

We respect President Trump’s efforts to restore truth and excellence in American education. But in this case, the Department of Education missed a critical opportunity to hold Washington accountable for policies that sideline parents and promote gender ideology to children under the guise of “inclusion.”

Now more than ever, it’s clear that we cannot rely on federal agencies, no matter who’s in the White House, to fix what’s broken in Washington state’s education system. Real change begins at the local level. That means parents and concerned citizens must get informed, get involved, and make their voices heard where it matters most: in school board meetings, curriculum committees, and community forums. Our children’s education is too important to leave in the hands of ideologues. Show up. Speak up. Be their voice.
