Week 2 Washington Legislative Session

Week 2 Washington Legislative Session

Each Monday of the session we’re be sending you our “Top 5” bills that have hearings or some kind of action happening in the legislature this week. There are certainly a lot more than 5, but we’ll try to pick the ones we feel are most important so you can direct your efforts to those. You can go to our Legislative Action Center at any time to see our full list of bills and calls to action if you want to dig in even deeper.

Each of the bills we send you will have CLW representation testifying either in person or remotely. Click the links below the image to sign in and have your position noted for the legislative record (this is quick, easy and IMPORTANT!)

No holidays for the legislature, so we’re not taking a holiday either. This MLK Jr Day, the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee will be hearing SB 5237, which would penalize school districts that have opted not to teach their students CRT/CSE and other woke ideology. They want to take away local control from your elected school board and force them by state mandate – or lose funding. Read more about this egregious bill HERE.

Next up is Tuesday with the “package” of anti-gun bills. There will be 5 anti-gun bills heard at 10:30am on January 17th. You can read about those and take action on all 5 HERE.

We testified against HB-1048, the Voting Rights Act, on Friday in the House and will testify against SB 5047 this week which is the senate companion version. You can watch Julie Barrett’s testimony from Friday morning HERE.

HB 1035 removes critical safeguards to protect very vulnerable Washington citizens from making a life-ending decision. Patients who are terminally ill are at great risk to make rash decisions out of fear. During a time when these patients should be receiving comfort and guidance in a compassionate way, this bill would allow for more providers to be able to prescribe lethal medication by mail, potentially leaving these patients to die alone and scared.

And finally, a bill we can support! SB 5032 would extend the felony driving under the influence lookback to 15 years while providing additional treatment options through the creation of a drug offender sentencing alternative for driving under the influence.
